IMPORTANT:
Both travel to and from the
observatory site and accommodation
at sea-level, if necessary, can be arranged through this form. Preferred transport to the observatory site is by taxi (transport to site with ING personnel may be requested but this departs from Santa Cruz de La Palma at
07:45am and it returns at 04:00pm, except Fridays 03:30pm, only on weekdays and cannot be guaranteed due
to seating limitations). The taxi should always be your first choice.
Please bear in mind that bad weather can restrict the access to the observatory. In these conditions ING activates the winter procedure, which means that the taxi can't get to the observatory's
residence before 09:15am and the way down must be done in daylight. Due to these restrictions, or if the observatory is unreachable, you will be reallocated in a hotel at sea-level or have to stay longer at the observatory's residence.
It is the observers' own responsibility to arrange the travel to La
Palma. Accommodation and
meals at the observatory site can be booked directly through the IAC residence's booking form. If you request additional guest accounts or if you are bringing your own computer that requires network access please don't forget to fill in the Computing Facilities Questionnaire for visiting astronomers.
La Palma is a holidays destination so please book your travel and accommodation well in advance, especially during peak
periods such as Carnival, Easter and Christmas when flights are heavily booked, and in July in years ending in 0 or 5
(when the Bajada de La Virgen, a big festival, takes place in Santa Cruz de La Palma). You can get the dates of the La Palma public holidays from the ING schedules (shown in green).
