Binary Star Catalogue Search

Min Max
RA Range (hours)
Dec Range (degrees)
Separation limits (arcsecs)
V limits (brighter star)
V limits (fainter star)
Multi-epoch only

This search tool was created to search for sub-arcsec binary stars, as targets for AO commissioning work. It searches the subset of binary stars in the Washington Double Star (WDS) Catalog that satisfy the criteria (1) separation < 1", (2) declination > -10 degrees and (3) V < 16 for one of the stars.

Clicking on "Search Database" when all the fields are blank will output all the binaries in this subset of data. For a more refined search, you can enter upper and/or lower limits for any of the five parameters given in the form. Note that there exists the facility to limit the search to binaries for which there exists data at more than one epoch - this can be useful to monitor whether the separations have changed significantly with time.

The output of the search gives an identification number (based on the coordinates), the right ascension and declination (in J2000 coordinates), the V magnitudes of the two stars, the first and last epochs at which the binary was observed, the separations and position angles at these epochs and any further notes. (See here for further details about the format of the WDS Catalog, including an explanation of the notes.)

This work makes use of the Washington Double Star Catalog maintained at the U.S. Naval Observatory.
